Leonardo Loredan was the Doge of Venice from 1501–21. In Bellini's painting he is shown wearing his robes of state. The hat and ornate buttons are part of his official wardrobe. The sitter can be identified as Doge Loredan by comparing his features with portrait medals of him.

The years from 1501 to 1521, in which Leonardo Loredan resided in the Doge's Palace in Venice, are considered to be the time when the decline of the Serenissima began. In the Orient, the Ottoman Empire cut old trade relations, Portugal opened the sea route to India, and after the discovery of America, Europe gained a new, highly lucrative field of activity in the Far West.
