Alexandra Kollontai died March 9, 1952, less than a month away from her 80th birthday. Kollontai was the subject of the 1994 TV film, A Wave of Passion: The Life of Alexandra Kollontai, with Glenda Jackson as the voice of Kollontai. A female Soviet diplomat in the 1930s with unconventional views on sexuality, probably inspired by Kollontai, was played by Greta Garbo in the movie Ninotchka (1939).
Born in 1872 to a wealthy land-owning family, Alexandra Kollontai was raised in both Russia and Finland, acquiring an early fluency in languages which served her well in her later revolutionary work. She began her political work in 1894, when she was a new mother, by teaching evening classes for workers in St Petersburg. Through that activity she was drawn into public and clandestine work with 303. 100 years ago, soon after the 1917 Revolution, Russian Marxist-Feminist Alexandra Kollontai published a piece on ‘ Communism and the Family ’ (1920).
